Sacked IW Founders West and Zampella Contract To EA

April 12, 2010 2 comments

So there’s been a huge broo-ha-ha about Modern Warfare developers Infinity Ward’s bosses and founders Jason West and Vince Zampella being unceremoniously sacked by publisher and parent company Activision.

We’re going to the judges aaand yes. That was actually a sentence.

The big to-do is all about West and Zampella claiming Activision owed those in the Infinity Ward studio millions of dollars in royalties from Modern Warfare 2, you know, the biggest entertainment launch in history. They claim Activision sacked them unjustly so as to avoid paying them around $36 million. They have since begun to sue their former publisher for this cash and to be able to take the Modern Warfare franchise with them, as they say they own the IP.

Activision claim that West and Zampella were waving their asses in front of EA’s nose in secret, trying to take Modern Warfare and set up shop with them (again,as it turns out; IW was originally set up as the team were disgruntled with working for EA, so they split). Now Activision are counter suing W&Z for fees and costs incurred in the alleged delay of Modern Warfare 3 because of all of this.

New Modern Warfare 2 DLC on it’s way

Modern warfare 2
So the first Map pack has been announced for Modern Warfare 2. The pack which is likely to consist of 3 or 4 new maps will be released on the 20th of March…..But because Microsoft have no real business strategy or any real idea of how you actually make money have thrown a shit ton of cash at Activision so the 20th of March date is for Xbox 360 users only. PC and PS3 gamers will get the pack a few weeks later.

I’m not sure how MS intend to make any money from the 360 at this rate. Everyone knows you generally lose money on every console sold, yet they keep paying through the nose for time exclusive content. Now this can only result in 3 things in my eyes, Xbox owners having to pay more for peripherals, Compared to the PS3 the Xbox is pretty bare bones as it is, they’ll have to start charging more for this DLC or Microsoft will have to get out of the console market.
I don’t see that happening though, MS have so much money I don’t think they care if they lose some money, the more likely is they’ll start charging more for things. Xbox owners already get screwed plenty by MS in regards to what they have to buy and what they have to pay so we’ll see what happens.

In any event MS continue there game of one upmanship even though no one is really too bothered. I don’t see people switching systems for any reason. People are very stuck in their ways.

Incidentally I’ve owned both machines and can say in my view the PS3 is better in every way and no amount of exclusive content, timed or not would make me switch.

Modern Warfare 2

MW2

So the most anticipated game of the year…Decade….ever, came out yesterday and as unashamed lover of modern warfare the first time round I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this, Modern Warfare 2. This morning though I think the overwhelming feeling among gamers will be one of disappointment. Shocking I hear you cry. It’s not that MW2 is a bad game, it’s awesome, I’m loving it. As with any thing that has this much hype and expectation it can never live up to it though. This isn’t the game that changed gaming it’s just a really fucking good FPS. The multiplayer cannot be rivalled. But it’s not a reinvention it just takes what worked in the first game and amps it up, it takes what didn’t work and dials it down or gets rid of it completely.
I’ve only played a small bit of the single player so can’t comment on that too much but again it’s not a reinvention, it just turns every thing up to 11. The Infinity Ward guys know how to design and execute a great level, their fast paced and relentless but apart from the already infamous airport level nothing is really new, it’s just really, really good.
Now that airport Level…Below be spoilers so don’t carry on if you don’t want to know.
The airport level is crazy; you play an undercover CIA agent tasked to join a Russian terrorist group led by the lead bad guy of the game, Makarov. The plan is to walk into a Moscow airport and kill any thing that moves. At the beginning of the game, when you first switch it on, you’re given a warning about this level, you’re told it could be upsetting and you can skip it if you want. I’m not a pussy so I just clicked “I’ll play it, don’t remind me again” and went about my business. I was not prepared for that level though. It’s not like it’s really upsetting or I disagree with it but the way it’s played out is very effective and quite unnerving. In a world where Grand theft Auto exists why would people have a problem with this? I thing it’s down to the way it’s done, the level is designed to make you feel uncomfortable.
It’s a pretty slow paced level, you don’t run, you walk slowly all while popping off innocents trying to flee, all your team is very calm, seemingly unaffected by the horror you’re bringing to these people and then the music is just plain eerie. I can’t remember why but it just was. It’s a brilliantly designed level, it has the affect it wants to, yes it wants you to kill civilians, you need to maintain your cover but they don’t want you to feel happy or comfortable about it. Many levels in call of duty revel in death, sitting on a hummer with a chain gun in front of you blasting away is damn fun but the airport level is not about fun. It’s an extremely effective level. The people complaining of it have probably not even seen it and if they have they probably haven’t actually sat down and played it and let it make them feel the way I did. I started out by just letting rip, it’s part of the game, there are no consequences for real people but by the end I was resisting, I was letting the injured crawl away and I was trying to miss. I didn’t want to be part of it any more. It’s maybe the greatest level I’ve ever played.
The game looks great, the graphics and sound is spot on and I’m looking forward to seeing what other single player missions are to come but the main thing I’m looking forward to is ranking up and unlocking things on multiplayer. I fucking love multiplayer.
